World Triathlon coming to Tauranga

Published: 06 August 2025

The Government is investing $2.65 million from the Major Events Fund to support Tri NZ to host World Triathlon events in Tauranga over 3 years.

The investment will support the hosting of 3 events:

  • 2026 World Triathlon World Cup
  • 2027 World Triathlon Championship Series
  • 2028 World Triathlon Championship Finals.

These high-profile World Triathlon events will attract international visitors to New Zealand and give a major boost to the economy.

Over the 3 years, the events are expected to attract more than 6,000 international visitors, generating 100,000 international visitor nights and $25 million in tourism visitor spend.

We’re expecting more than 4,500 international competitors for the 2028 World Championship final alone.

Each event will also be broadcast live and streamed to a global audience, reaching millions of international viewers and showcasing New Zealand on the world stage.
