Temporary accommodation support for recent severe weather event in Wellington, Manawatu- Whanganui

Published: 04 May 2026

The Government’s Temporary Accommodation Service (TAS) has been activated today to support people displaced by the late April severe weather event affecting the Wellington region and Ōhura in Manawatu-Whanganui.

TAS is accepting registrations from people who are unable to return home, or who expect they may need temporary accommodation in the future as they undertake repair work.

“If you have been affected by the recent severe weather events in the Wellington and Manawatu-Whanganui regions and need support finding temporary accommodation, we can help”, says Gemma Wiig, Acting Head of Accommodation and Insurance Response.

“TAS is working closely with the Wellington Regional Emergency Management Office (WREMO) and Horizons Civil Defence Emergency Management, as well as central agencies, local councils, communities and iwi following the event to match needs with support options.

“Agencies will continue to work together to provide wrap-around support for affected communities, including social services, financial support, and temporary accommodation,” Gemma Wiig said.

People affected by the recent severe weather who have a current, or expected future need for temporary accommodation, are encouraged to register via the TAS website or phone:

MBIE has a responsibility to coordinate temporary accommodation following an emergency, as per the National Civil Defence Emergency Management Plan Order 2015.

Temporary accommodation is distinct from the provision of shelter and emergency accommodation, which is provided by regional CDEM Groups for short periods (of up to two weeks) in the immediate aftermath of an event.

If households need support with residential insurance claims, the New Zealand Claims Resolution Service (NZCRS) provide free, independent advice and support:
