Kmart cancels recall on three sand products
Published: 05 December 2025
Kmart NZ has informed the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) its decision to cancel the recall of 3 products – Blue, Green and Pink Magic Sand products – after tests commissioned by the company confirmed no asbestos was found.

We encourage consumers who had acted on Kmart NZ’s recall notices from 15 November 2025 and 4 December 2025 that have been cancelled to contact the company for remedial costs incurred.
As in the case of the products recalled voluntarily by companies and suppliers, the decision to cancel a recall is also the supplier’s decision.
Under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, MBIE is responsible for publishing voluntary recall notices as well as when a company cancels recalled products.
This cancellation does not impact the following recall notices from Kmart:
- 14-piece Sandcastle Building Set.
- Make Your Own Unicorn Sand Ornaments.
The health, safety and the wellbeing of New Zealand families remains MBIE’s highest priority. We are aware that further tests are being commissioned, and results are awaited.
A full list of recalled sand products, along with advice from Health New Zealand and WorkSafe, is available on the Product Recall website.

Ultimately, suppliers and retailers are responsible for the quality of their goods, and we would encourage consumers to seek a remedy from the supplier and retailer in the first instance or, failing that, approach the disputes tribunal.
Further information
If you purchased this product for personal, domestic or household use, contact the supplier or store for refund options. If you’ve incurred losses (e.g. in clean-up costs etc), you might be able to obtain damages from the supplier under the Consumer Guarantees Act (CGA). This will be for consumers to discuss directly with the suppliers. You can find more information on your rights with unsafe products under the CGA on the Consumer Protection website.

Independent testing
We are aware that some consumers and businesses are conducting their own independent tests for the presence of asbestos.
If a positive test result is found indicating asbestos in a play sand product, please send a copy of the test reports to recalls@mbie.govt.nz
We will contact the supplier to facilitate the recall process and require a test report that provides the brand, make, product name, SKU, colour etc. of the product tested and found to be positive. By sending the report to us you are giving permission to share it (personal details will be redacted) with the supplier and other relevant government agencies.
