Further investment supports Hauraki Rail Trail recovery

The funding will help restore damaged sections of the trail and support its continued operation as a key tourism and recreation asset for the region. It follows an initial $300,000 allocation in April for immediate safety work that enabled the trail to reopen after extensive flooding damage.

The investment is being provided through the International Visitor Levy via the New Zealand Cycle Trail Fund. The Hauraki Rail Trail Charitable Trust will also contribute funding towards this stage of the repair programme.

The Hauraki Rail Trail attracts more than 32,000 visitors annually and contributes an estimated $12 million each year to the local economy. The trail supports a range of regional businesses, including accommodation providers, hospitality operators, transport services and visitor experiences.

The January weather event caused significant damage to trail surfaces, riverbank edges, structures and access points, particularly within the Karangahake Gorge section of the trail. Repair work is focused on restoring affected areas and ensuring the trail remains safe and accessible for visitors.

The Hauraki Rail Trail is one of the 23 Great Rides that make up Ngā Haerenga New Zealand Cycle Trails network. More than 2 million people use the Great Rides each year, contributing an estimated $1.28 billion to regional economies across New Zealand.
