Published: 23 October 2025

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) invite you to engage and provide feedback on our draft long-term insights briefing.

Long-term insights briefings help ensure New Zealand is prepared for the future by informing strategic priorities and policies across government.

The topic for this joint briefing is ‘New Zealand’s productivity in a changing world. How can we accelerate the growth of high productivity activities in the New Zealand economy?'

Productivity is a key driver of prosperity, resilience, and quality of life. The briefing explores how both global and domestic factors influence New Zealand’s productivity, highlighting opportunities in knowledge-intensive industries, technology-driven growth, and deeper international connections.

Drawing on international and domestic case studies, the briefing introduces a practical policy framework for how New Zealand could approach productivity. This includes a mix of broad economy-wide policies and targeted domestic and international policy levers, tailored to New Zealand’s unique strengths and challenges.

MBIE and MFAT invite feedback from the public to help refine the insights and strategic choices presented in the draft. Your input will help shape the final briefing. You can read the draft briefing and submit your feedback online.
