Consultation open now on the New Zealand Relay Service

Published: 02 June 2026

MBIE has opened a 6 week targeted consultation, seeking feedback from people who use the New Zealand Relay Service (NZRS) on what services are best needed for its future.

The NZ Relay Service enables people with hearing and speech communication difficulties to use the phone and communicate. It provides services for people who are Deaf, Deafblind, hard of hearing, and for people who have speech communication difficulties.

Every 6 years, MBIE reviews the Service to ensure it keeps pace with technology and the needs of those who use it. The outcome of the consultation will help identify the best provider to run the Service, which comes up for renewal in May 2027.

This will help ensure the Service remains relevant and meets the needs of those who use it, by identifying potential improvements and technology preferences.

People who use the Service and their friends, whānau, supporters and advocates are encouraged to register with MBIE to participate in the consultation.

MBIE has commissioned disability specialist All is For All to run the consultation and proactively contact communities that use the Service. Users of the Service will be invited to register and participate, via a range of formats and engagement types.
