Electricity network costs are currently driving increases in New Zealanders’ power bills and the energy sector needs to help make power more affordable, announced Energy Minister Simeon Brown and Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Cameron Brewer today.
The latest Energy Quarterly data release from the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment (MBIE) shows renewables generated 94.5% of all electricity in the March 2026 quarter, up from 83.2% in the same quarter last year, says MBIE Domains Manager Amapola Generosa.
From today, MBIE will begin consulting on a new two-layer winter energy reliability obligation to strengthen the electricity sector to secure enough long-duration firm generation to efficiently get the system through a dry winter.
Annual petroleum reserves data released today by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) shows as of 1 January 2026 New Zealand’s natural gas proven plus probable (2P) reserves declined 23% from last year to 731 petajoules (PJ), the lowest level since recording began 20 years ago, says Amapola Generosa, Domains Manager, MBIE.
