Temporary Accommodation Service activated for the Tasman and Nelson severe weather event

Published: 11 July 2025

Associate Housing Minister Tama Potaka has announced that the Temporary Accommodation Service (TAS) in the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) activated at 12:00pm on Friday 11 July to offer support to households displaced by the recent severe weather event in Tasman and Nelson regions.

TAS is working with local authorities to understand how many people are displaced from homes that will need to be repaired or rebuilt. TAS is now accepting registrations for people who cannot return to their homes and need assistance in finding temporary accommodation.

The TAS team will work with every household to establish their needs and connect them with available accommodation. People can register their details at the Temporary Accommodation Service website or call 0508 754 163.

Tenants and landlords of rental properties can check their tenancy rights and obligations at the Tenancy Services website.

Temporary accommodation is different to ‘shelter’ and ‘emergency accommodation’, which is provided for a short period by civil defence and emergency management agencies. Temporary accommodation is used for short to medium terms, providing households with accommodation while repairs are undertaken following a Civil Defence Emergency.

Wherever possible TAS uses existing commercial and residential housing as temporary accommodation. Where there is a shortage of rental accommodation in the affected area, TAS procures and deploys additional housing supply for temporary accommodation to support residential housing recovery.

TAS currently has two other responses active in Auckland and Hawke's Bay following the North Island Weather Event 2023 and the Wairoa Flooding Event 2024.
