Kiwi Space Activator: Turning big ideas into big impact

Published: 12 December 2025

The government has launched a $1.8 million pilot programme to help Kiwi space innovators develop technologies that could one day form part of a future national space mission.

The Kiwi Space Activator will support New Zealand businesses and universities to move novel space technologies and concepts from the laboratory to the skies – whether high-altitude or in orbit – further strengthening New Zealand’s reputation as a hub for space innovation.

Capability developed through these projects could contribute to a future national space mission, with potential applications such as resource management, monitoring illegal fishing and more.

The programme is administered by the New Zealand Space Agency.

Programme overview:

  • 2 rounds of funding over 2 years.
  • Up to $600,000 per successful project.
  • Total funding available: $1.8 million.
  • Minimum of 3 projects supported.
  • Ready to fly within 18-24 months.

Applications are open now for round one funding, and close at 11.59pm on Sunday 1 March 2026.
