Government invests in bold research to improve lives and grow the economy

The Government is supporting 107 bold research ideas with the potential to transform New Zealand’s economy, health and environment through the Marsden Fund.

A total of $80.3 million (excluding GST) will be distributed over the next 3 years to fund 68 Standard grants, 37 Fast-Start grants for emerging researchers, and 2 Marsden Fund Council Awards for large interdisciplinary projects.

These projects span a wide range of fields including biomedical breakthroughs, climate resilience, cultural heritage and advanced technology. Examples include:

  • Improving cancer treatment through advanced cell therapies (Malaghan Institute of Medical Research).
  • Turning geothermal waste heat into electricity for cleaner industry (Earth Sciences New Zealand).
  • Tackling drug-resistant tuberculosis in Māori and Pasifika communities (University of Otago).
  • Harnessing native plant microbiomes to boost crop resilience (Bioeconomy Science Institute).
  • Exploring the origins and hidden components of the universe (University of Auckland).

Innovative, curiosity-driven research is an essential part of New Zealand’s science system. This investment enables breakthrough discoveries and cultivates the next generation of research leaders, while supporting a diverse portfolio of research activities for the future.
