“Christmas should be about joy, not risk,” says Ian Caplin, MBIE’s Product Safety Spokesperson.
“According to ACC, an average of 1,250 toy-related injuries occur each year among our most vulnerable children (aged 0–3).
“Choosing toys that match a child’s age and developmental stage is one of the simplest ways to keep them safe.”
Top tips for safe gifting
- Age labels – Make sure the toy suits the child’s age and developmental stage.
- Small parts – Prevent choking hazards for young children by making sure toys can’t be put in the ears, nose or mouth, and avoid toys with long cords or strings.
- Durability – Check that toys are well-made and won’t easily break or splinter. Look for smooth finishes and avoid sharp edges.
- Materials – Look for non-toxic finishes and avoid strong chemical smells.
- Labelling – Ensure packaging includes safety warnings, manufacturer details, as well as which toys need adult supervision.
- Volume control – Make sure toys aren’t too loud for little ears.
- Swallow risk – Watch for small parts or items like button batteries that could be swallowed.
“Spend a few extra minutes checking labels, and when you’re unsure, ask the retailer or check online reviews,” adds Mr Caplin.
“A little extra care put in before purchasing means your gift will be remembered for all the right reasons, not a trip to the emergency room.”
