Published: 08 July 2025

The Government has released the first New Zealand strategy for Artificial Intelligence (AI) alongside guidance for businesses to invest with confidence in AI.

The Government’s AI strategy released today sets a clear direction for New Zealand, giving New Zealand businesses the confidence to safely use, develop and innovate with this transformative tech.

The strategy supports the Government’s Going for Growth ambitions, and promotes smarter use of advanced technologies like AI, to grow New Zealand’s economy faster, enabling better living standards and opportunities for all New Zealanders.

New Zealand’s approach to AI will be in accordance with the OECD’s AI principles, including respecting the rule of law, human rights and democratic values, such as fairness and privacy, as well as robustness, security and safety.

Alongside the AI strategy, the Government has also released the responsible AI guidance for businesses. This is a practical, voluntary guide that outlines good practices and actions that can support firms’ successful adoption of AI.
