With over a million deaths each year, tuberculosis (TB) is the world’s deadliest infectious disease. Senior Epidemiologist Professor Philip Hill and Senior Statistician Professor Katrina Sharples of the University of Otago aim to reduce this global problem as part of an international research project funded through Horizon Europe.
As an island nation at the edge of the world, New Zealand is no stranger to natural hazards. But despite our isolation, we are far from alone. Kiwi researchers, participating in a Horizon Europe project, say international collaboration is crucial to disaster mitigation and they’re building tools to aid resilience in cities around the globe.
The National Science Challenges were established in 2014 and finished in June 2024. The aim of these challenges was to tackle the biggest science-based issues and opportunities facing New Zealand. The Challenges brought together the country’s top scientists to work collaboratively across disciplines, institutions and borders to achieve their objectives.

Members appointed to Science System Advisory Group
In July 2021 Bragato Research Institute received $5 million (excl GST) for a Future Winegrowing Platform to support the transition to be a financially self-sustaining research institute over a 2 year period from July 2021 to June 2023.
In 2015 Bragato Research Institute received $12.5 million (excl GST) to establish and build a Blenheim-based research institute over a 5.5 year period from June 2017 to December 2022.
