Public consultation launched on International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy

Since 2019 most international visitors have paid a $35 levy which ensures visitors contribute towards providing and maintaining high quality visitor experiences. 

The remainder of the costs generated by international tourism are currently covered by New Zealand taxpayers and ratepayers, or not at all.

The government is seeking feedback on 4 options for the IVL:

1. remaining at $35 per eligible person
2. increasing it to $50 per eligible person
3. increasing it to $70 per eligible person
4. increasing it to $100 per eligible person

The government is also seeking feedback on what the levy should be used for across tourism and conservation, including addressing visitor pressure on mixed-use tourism infrastructure, international marketing, visitor pressure on public conservation estate, and other areas related to tourism.

Feedback will be used to develop a strategy for future IVL investment and funding to ensure revenue is being used for high value investments in tourism and conservation.
