Charges by family travel group - NZ citizens or residence class visa holders

Use these scenarios as guidance to understand how different family travel group configurations will impact your charges. The charges shown here are for the current period of isolation in a managed isolation or quarantine facility.

Even with national quarantine and isolation moving back to the health system in July 2023, you may still be required to pay for your stay in MIQ.

The charges on this page, updated to reflect the charges for the stay in a managed isolation or quarantine facility, relate to people who fit one of the following categories:

  1. All individuals in the family travel group are New Zealand citizens or residence class visa holders or Australian citizens or permanent residence visa holders who are ordinarily resident in New Zealand, AND none of the individuals in the family travel group are an other critical worker, OR
  2. One individual in the family travel group is a New Zealand citizen or residence class visa holder and the other individuals are family members (spouse, partner, guardian or child under 18) of that individual, AND none of the individuals in the family travel group are an other critical worker, OR
  3. One individual in the family travel group is a critical health worker and the other individuals are family members of that individual, AND none of the individuals in the room are an other critical worker.

Family travel groups of up to 12 people will only be charged 1 first adult fee, regardless of how many rooms they occupy.

A “family member” of any person (person A) means another person who:

  • has a biological or legal relationship with person A; or
  • is a member of person A’s whānau or other culturally recognised family group.

How to interpret the scenarios below

The following scenarios are for people who entered New Zealand on or after 1 January 2022.

  • The maximum number of people per room is 4. If you arrived after 1 January 2022, you will only be charged for one adult at the full rate, even if you have more than one adult in each room.
  • Children under the age of 3 cannot be unaccompanied in a room, they require an individual over the age of 14 to accompany them
  • Families with more than 4 members must be split over multiple rooms. There must be an adult in every room
  • When a child (aged 3-17) is the “first and only person in the room”, their legal guardian will be liable for the fees.

The fee (including GST) for NZ citizens and residence class visa holders is:

  • $1,610 for the first or only person in the family travel group
  • $460 for each additional adult in the family travel group
  • $230 for each additional child (3 to 17 years old, inclusive) in the family travel group
  • children under 3 years old are not charged.
