The University of Auckland Funding are contracted by MBIE for $3.35 million excluding GST to host the New Zealand based Mission Operations Control Centre over 7 years to May 2028.

MBIE funding details
Successful in their application to a call for proposals process in 2021, the University of Auckland have been awarded the following Strategic Science Investment Fund (SSIF) Infrastructure funding to host the New Zealand based Mission Operations Control Centre for the $350,000 (excl GST) in 2020/21 to engage with the mission development activities and initiate institutional planning for training and facilities.
$1 million (excl GST) per annum from 2022/23 to 2024/25 to support the transition to hosting and subsequent operation of the MOCC.
Additional funding for the remainder of the contracted term will be negotiated after a mid-term review.
About our investment
The Mission Operations Control Centre (MOCC) is a significant investment in infrastructure that will build New Zealand’s capability to operate complex satellite missions.
The MOCC will support New Zealand’s first national official space mission as a country to combat climate change. It will provide a set of functional capabilities for the command, control and support of the MethaneSAT satellite and future satellite missions for New Zealand.
In addition, the centre will be an enduring piece of national infrastructure available to all New Zealand research organisations to support future missions and enable the enhancement of New Zealand’s space sector capability.
