Funding support for hydrogen projects

Information about potential funding sources for hydrogen projects in New Zealand.

New Zealand hydrogen funding support

At present there are no New Zealand Government funding sources dedicated exclusively to support hydrogen projects in New Zealand.

There are however funding sources for clean energy technologies, such as the Low Emission Transport Fund, administered by EECA, that may be applicable to hydrogen projects.

International funding sources

Some countries are funding hydrogen projects and that funding may be used to support projects located in New Zealand. This section provides information on such funds where information is available.

Germany

The German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (BWMi) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) announced a call for proposals (CFP) in 2021 for joint green hydrogen technology projects. The goal of the funding is to promote the use of German technology abroad, to contribute to timely and targeted efforts to set up a global market for green hydrogen, and to prepare structures for the import of hydrogen into Germany.

This funding opportunity with Germany has now closed. Projects were recently announced as part of the Catalyst Fund Strategic – New Zealand-Germany Green Hydrogen Research Programme.
