MBIE welcomes International Visitor Survey Review
On: 31 July 2018
The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) has welcomed a Stats NZ report issued today with recommendations for improving the International Visitor Survey.
MBIE requested last year that Stats NZ review the International Visitor Survey, in response to concerns raised by some tourism industry representatives about the reliability of the data, MBIE’s General Manager of Research, Evaluation and Analytics, Eileen Basher, says.
“It is always valuable to conduct reviews and we are committed to continuous improvement of our data products,” Ms Basher says.
“While it is gratifying that the review found the survey is generally fit for purpose and that revisions to previously published estimates are not necessary at this stage, we are taking Stats NZ’s recommendations seriously and are already working to address some of the issues identified.”
MBIE has provided a full response to the review which outlines the steps it will take and changes it has put already in place.
“The actions we are taking will result in a better product for people in the tourism industry – more accurate information on the spending habits of international visitors with more thorough analysis and insights to provide context for the figures,” Ms Basher says.
“We are focusing on better implementation of some technical features of the survey and improving governance and monitoring, engagement with stakeholders and communication of results. We are also seeking expert advice on the design of the questionnaire.
“We are taking this opportunity to refine our processes to ensure the information delivered through the International Visitor Survey is accurate and valuable.”
The International Visitor Survey is a quarterly data product produced by MBIE. It measures the expenditure, characteristics and behaviours of international visitors to New Zealand.
The independent review conducted by Stats NZ assessed the reliability of the statistics produced and recommends improvements to ensure the survey meets the needs of the customers.
