Tourism Recovery Plan underway

Published: 08 June 2020

The Tourism Recovery Plan is underway, with first recipients to receive funding from the $400 million Tourism Sector Recovery Plan announced, along with criteria for the Strategic Tourism Assets Protection Programme, and the co-chairs of the government’s New Zealand Tourism Futures Taskforce.

Discover Waitomo and New Zealand’s 31 Regional Tourism Organisations (RTOs) received critical funding from the Strategic Tourism Assets Protection Programme.

Discover Waitomo received up to $4 million, with RTOs having access to up to $20.2 million. This investment comes following the Tourism Recovery Ministers Group meeting to determine eligibility criteria and make urgent support decisions.

The Strategic Tourism Assets Protection Programme intends to protect assets in the tourism industry that form the core of New Zealand's essential tourism offering and ensure their survival through the disruption caused by COVID-19.

Applications for the programme are open now and close at 5pm on 18 June 2020.

The eligibility for funding is very targeted and many assets/businesses will not be eligible for support through the programme.

Eligibility criteria and the application process is available on our Strategic Tourism Assets Protection Programme page.

The Tourism Futures Taskforce will be led by co-chairs Rotorua Mayor Steve Chadwick and Tourism Holdings Chief Executive Grant Webster. The Taskforce is a public/private taskforce to lead the thinking on the future of tourism in New Zealand. It will provide recommendations on short and long-term issues.
