Government to introduce law changes following retail fuel market study

Published: 27 February 2020

The Government has agreed to introduce changes to improve competition in the retail fuel market following the Commerce Commission’s report into the retail fuel market. The changes will be introduced through a Fuel Industry Bill.

The Commission’s report, released in December last year, found that fuel companies were making high profits due to a lack of competition in the industry. In response to the findings, the Government will introduce changes in the Fuel Industry Bill to promote greater competition at the wholesale level and lower the price of retail fuel.

The Government is giving this Bill priority and expects to pass it into law later this year.
