Getting the Great Rides back on track following wild winter weather

Published: 01 October 2021

Winter storms and flooding in June and July severely damaged some of New Zealand’s 22 Great Rides, which are part of Ngā Haerenga, the New Zealand Cycle Trails network.

Aotearoa’s most northern Great Ride, the Pou Herenga Tai Twin Coast Cycle Trail, Hauraki Rail Trail, Tasman Great Taste Trail and the Queenstown Trail were affected by washouts, slips and/or flooding.

Local communities will be able to repair the trails thanks to help from a total of $650,000 for extreme events recovery work, which is part of the Ngā Haerenga, the New Zealand Cycle Trails Fund.

The Great Rides bring economic, social and wellbeing benefits to communities.
