Cabinet approve next steps for Electronic Travel Authority (ETA)
Published: 05 March 2019
Last week the Government confirmed details of the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA). From 1 October 2019, travellers from 60 visa waiver countries will need to hold an ETA before travelling to New Zealand, reducing the time needed for border clearance and strengthening border security.
Key details around timing, eligibility, and costs were considered in the paper. Requests for ETAs will be able to be made from July 2019, and will become mandatory for travel from 1 October 2019 onwards, for air and cruise travellers and crew, coming to New Zealand. An ETA will last up to two years (five years for crew), and will cost $9.00 (NZD) when completed via mobile application and $12.00 (NZD) via web browser.
These are just a few of the details considered and you can view the full contents of the Cabinet paper on the MBIE website.
