Housing affordability is a significant issue for many New Zealand families, the economy and government.
MBIE, in conjunction with other agencies, has a comprehensive work programme in place to improve housing affordability. The work spans five key areas:
- the supply of land
- the role of regulation
- the provision of infrastructure
- the cost of building materials; and
- increasing skills and the level of innovation in the construction sector.
Housing Accord and Special Housing Areas
The Housing Accord and Special Housing Areas legislation introduced as part of Budget 2013 enables the streamlining of new housing developments. The legislation allows special housing areas to be designated under accords between the Government and Council.
