New Zealand Business Number (NZBN)
The New Zealand Business Number (NZBN) is a globally unique identifier, which any business in New Zealand can now have. Over time the NZBN will become the main identifier for all businesses.
The NZBN will transform how businesses work with each other and with government. Using it will speed up businesses’ interactions with government, suppliers, customers and other businesses.
What are the benefits of a NZBN?
The NZBN will make it easier and faster for businesses to share and update critical business information. Some initial benefits include:
- Simpler and more reliable business decisions and transactions.
- Sharing information and knowledge between businesses will be streamlined.
- Easier access to more customer information will improve business decisions.
NZBN Whole of Government Directions
In 2015, the New Zealand Business Number programme consulted with more than 180 government agencies on ways they can support the implementation of New Zealand Business Number (NZBN) and the associated delivery of benefits to businesses. In May 2016, Cabinet agreed to the text of Cabinet Directive (via Cabinet Circular) to specified departments and a Ministerial Direction to specified Crown entities under the Crown Entities Act 2004 setting out requirements and timeframes for state sector implementation of the NZBN.
