Exciting projects for Manawatū-Whanganui

On: 20 June 2018

The Manawatū-Whanganui region – one of the Provincial Growth Fund’s surge regions – has received a boost with two significant announcements in June.

The Government will partner with the region on exciting tourism and forestry projects aimed at providing jobs and growing the economy.

The Fund will loan $10 million to Ruapehu Alpine Lifts Ltd for the construction of a high-speed gondola on the Whakapapa ski field, providing a boost for tourism across the central North Island. The project is expected to create a significant number of jobs and is part of a broader plan to boost visitor numbers to the Ruapehu and Taupo districts.

The Fund will also provide almost $1 million to see 1,350,000 trees planted on private land this winter, which will see a lift in productivity and incomes, and help diversify land use. This is an exciting initiative that will see jobs created in remote parts of the country and bring social and environmental benefits.

Both projects are well supported in the region by local government, industry, farmers and the community, and will make a positive and lasting impact for a part of New Zealand that has great potential but needs support.
